It is usually easy to find people who will tell you why you shouldn’t start a business. They will say that it is too risky, too costly, too time consuming, etc. In some situations they are right, but if you have the drive and ambition to start your own business it can be done. This particularly applies if you are starting a social enterprise, but it also applies in all other forms of business. By running your own business you can create jobs in your local community, and support the causes and organisations that are important to you.

If you are in the early stages of a new business you will think this one should not be on the list. It is right that you will have to work hard to get your business up and running, but your goal should be to get the business to a position that you have more free time to spend on the things that are important to you.

At the very least you can cut down on your commute as you can decide where to locate your business.

Are you bored with what you are currently doing? For many people this is a major driver for them starting a new business – they want to do things that they are interested in. When you are doing something every day that you are passionate about it is much easier to maintain your energy levels and make it a success.

If you have children you might think that starting a business will benefit them. You can pass your business onto your children, or sell the business at some stage in the future and use the money to help your children get a start in life.

Making money should not be your only motivation though. In fact, it probably shouldn’t even be your main motivation, but being able to live the life that you want to live can help you achieve your goals.

Many entrepreneurs and small business owners believe this is the most important – being able to control their own destiny. It doesn’t always work out, but at least they are doing it their way, and when success comes it is even sweeter.
